About

Most people know me as a workers' compensation attorney.

That has been the focus of my professional life for more than three decades. It doesn't tell the whole story.

James F. Aspell

I'm a trial lawyer, business owner, educator, author, licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain, and lifelong student of leadership. Whether I'm representing an injured worker in a Connecticut courtroom, teaching legal concepts to future professionals, writing about the law, or sailing the New England coast, I've always been driven by the same belief: preparation, integrity, and continuous learning create exceptional results.

Early years

I graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1983, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree before attending Western New England University School of Law, where I received my Juris Doctor in 1986.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted to build a career helping people solve difficult problems. The law offered the perfect combination of intellectual challenge, advocacy, and service. Every case presented a new puzzle. Every client had a unique story. Every outcome had the potential to change someone's life.

Those principles still motivate me today.

Finding my calling

Early in my career I discovered that workers' compensation law wasn't simply about statutes, medical records, and hearings.

It was about people.

  • People whose lives changed in an instant.
  • People who suddenly couldn't work, provide for their families, or return to careers they had spent decades building.

I realised that the legal system could be intimidating, especially for someone dealing with pain, financial uncertainty, and an unfamiliar insurance process. My role wasn't simply to know the law. It was to guide clients through one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

That realisation shaped the course of my career. Rather than becoming a general practitioner, I chose to devote myself to mastering Connecticut workers' compensation law.

Building expertise

That commitment eventually led me to become a Board Certified Workers' Compensation Specialist through the Connecticut Bar Association, an achievement earned by only a select group of attorneys who have demonstrated extensive experience, knowledge, and professionalism in this highly specialised area of law.

Throughout my career I have represented thousands of injured workers in hearings, trials, mediations, and appeals across Connecticut. Every case has reinforced the importance of preparation, credibility, and relentless advocacy.

  • The law changes.
  • Medicine evolves.
  • Industries transform.
  • Learning never stops.

Teacher at heart

One of the most rewarding chapters of my career was serving as an Adjunct Professor at the University of New Haven, where I taught Aviation Law.

Teaching challenged me to think differently about the law. It's one thing to understand a legal concept yourself. It's another to explain it clearly enough that others understand it as well.

That experience strengthened my belief that education is one of the most valuable services a lawyer can provide.

  • Clients deserve answers they can understand.
  • Students deserve practical instruction.
  • Professionals deserve insight grounded in real-world experience.

I've tried to carry that philosophy into every aspect of my career.

Entrepreneur

In 2006, my professional life changed dramatically. After spending twenty years building someone else's law practice, I unexpectedly found myself starting over.

With twenty client files, a part-time assistant working ten hours a week, and an office in the attic of a funeral home, I launched the Law Offices of James F. Aspell, P.C.

Those early years demanded far more than legal knowledge. I had to become a marketer, recruiter, leader, accountant, strategist, and entrepreneur almost overnight. The experience taught me lessons no classroom ever could.

Today the firm has grown into one of Connecticut's leading workers' compensation practices, serving clients throughout the state while remaining committed to the personal service and accessibility that defined those early days. If you have a live claim or need counsel, the firm is the right door: aspelllaw.com.

Growth has never been about becoming the biggest. It's about becoming better.

Author

In 2026 I published When Work Breaks You: A Usable Guide for Injured Workers and Connecticut Attorneys. The book represents the culmination of decades spent answering the same questions from injured workers, physicians, attorneys, and family members.

I wanted to create a resource that explained Connecticut workers' compensation in plain English instead of legal jargon. Too often, injured workers are left trying to understand one of the most important legal systems in their lives through confusing statutes and fragmented information. This book was my effort to change that.

If readers finish the book feeling more informed, more confident, and better prepared to advocate for themselves or their clients, then it has accomplished exactly what I intended.

More about the book

Life beyond the office

Outside the practice of law, one of my greatest passions is sailing. I hold a United States Coast Guard 50 Ton Master Captain's License with a Large Sail Endorsement, a credential that reflects years of study, practical experience, and respect for the responsibilities of command on the water.

Sailing has taught me lessons that apply equally well in the courtroom and in business.

  • Preparation matters.
  • Conditions can change quickly.
  • Experience builds confidence.
  • Leadership requires calm judgment when others feel uncertain.

Whether navigating coastal waters or guiding a client through litigation, success often comes down to anticipating problems before they arise and staying focused on the destination.

Leadership and lifelong learning

The legal profession continues to evolve, and so do I. I'm constantly studying leadership, marketing, technology, artificial intelligence, client service, and business development, because I believe professionals should never stop learning.

The day you believe you've mastered everything is the day you stop growing.

Some of my best ideas have come from books outside the legal profession, conversations with entrepreneurs, time spent mentoring younger attorneys, and lessons learned from building and leading a successful business. Curiosity has become one of my greatest professional assets.

What matters most

At the end of the day, awards, titles, and accomplishments are gratifying, but they aren't what define a career.

Character does.

  • I'm proud of the clients who trusted me during some of the hardest moments of their lives.
  • I'm proud of the team we've built.
  • I'm proud of the students I've taught, the professionals I've mentored, and the knowledge I've been able to share through writing and speaking.

Most of all, I'm grateful that after more than thirty-five years in the legal profession, I still enjoy coming to work every day. Helping people solve difficult problems never gets old. Neither does learning something new.

I believe the best professionals are never finished becoming better. That's the philosophy that has guided my career, and it's the one that will continue to guide me for years to come.
